Why get an ADHD assessment?
- To better understand the causes and sources of your child’s challenges with attention and/or impulse control
- To determine whether these challenges are best understand as meeting the criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD, or whether there is another explanation
- To find ways to support your child’s development, learning, and well-being
Assessment for ADHD can be conducted in one of two ways:
- 1) Focused assessment for ADHD
- 2) As part of a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment
What does a focused ADHD assessment involve?
- Interview with parents to gather comprehensive background information and assess your child’s symptoms, behaviours, and social and emotional well-being
- Review of relevant documents (e.g., school report cards or transcripts, any previous assessment or medical reports)
- Standardized questionnaires completed by parents, teachers, and the individual being assessed
- Meeting with your child for standardized testing to assess select information processing and learning skills (1 – 3 hours)
What happens once the assessment process is complete?
- You will receive feedback about the assessment findings verbally and through a written report
- We will share with you our understanding of how all of the information and results fit together
- We will explain to you whether your child meets criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD
- A thorough list of recommendations will be provided to help support your child’s academic (e.g., school learning), vocational (e.g., work), and family functioning
How much does a focused ADHD assessment cost?
- The total fee for a focused ADHD assessment is $2,000
What is a psychoeducational assessment that involves an ADHD component?
- A comprehensive evaluation of your child’s skills and functioning in different areas
- A way to better understand your child’s unique strengths and areas of challenge
- Standardized tests are used to assess thinking and reasoning (e.g., intellectual), academic (e.g., learning), memory, and information processing skills
- We also seek to understand your child’s behaviour and how they function within relationships
- Your child’s symptoms related to ADHD will be specifically assessed
- Information about your child’s social and emotional well-being is gathered through interviews, questionnaires, observations, and a review of any relevant documents you provide to us
