What is a psychoeducational assessment?
- A way to better understand your child’s unique strengths and areas of challenge
- This will inform recommendations for how best to support your child’s well-being and development
- Based on your specific questions and concerns, we will choose the most appropriate assessment tools and techniques to learn about your child
- This involves a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s skills and functioning in different areas
- Standardized tests are used to assess thinking and reasoning (e.g., intellectual), academic (e.g., learning), memory, and information processing skills
- We also seek to understand your child’s behaviour and how they function within relationships
- Information about your child’s social and emotional well-being is gathered through interviews, questionnaires, observations, and a review of any relevant documents you provide to us
What does a psychoeducational assessment typically involve?
- Interview with parents to collect background information
- Assessment testing sessions with your child
- 6 – 10 hours (number of sessions can be discussed)
- Carefully selected standardized tests and other assessment techniques
- Interview (when developmentally appropriate)
- Standardized questionnaires completed by parents and teachers
- When appropriate, interviews with relevant others (e.g., teachers, health professionals involved in your child’s care)
- Meeting with parents to verbally share assessment findings and recommendations
- Meeting with your child or adolescent to share developmentally sensitive information about their strengths and areas that could benefit from added support
- Comprehensive written report
What happens once the assessment process is complete?
- You will receive feedback about the assessment findings verbally and through a comprehensive written report
- We will share with you our understanding of how all of the information and results fit together
- We will let you know about your child’s unique strengths and areas of challenge
- When appropriate, a diagnosis may be provided (e.g., mental health diagnosis, Learning Disability, ADHD)
- A thorough list of recommendations to help support your child and address your concerns will be provided
- Feedback and recommendations can also be provided to your child’s school upon request

- Fees are typically $3, 800, but can vary depending on the nature of your concerns

- We invite you and your child to think about what you would like to learn through the assessment process, and about any specific questions or concerns you would like addressed
